AWAKINO FISHING

awakino's hidden fishing gems

SURFCASTing sea fishing in awakino

Awakino and Mokau

You can fish for kahawai at either the Mokau or Awakino river mouths, and for snapper and gurnard from the beach (we can point you in the right direction). There's also great kite or Kontiki fishing, with large snapper landed for those who know where to go.

Mokau township (5 minutes from Awakino) has a fishing club, and you can find plenty of information there.

Even when you get away from the river mouths, the west coast has a lot of good fishing opportunities. The old motor camp was once home to a record snapper catch.

Marokopa / Kiritehere

If you can get across the Marokopa river and are willing to walk, there is good surf fishing around the Marokopa / Kiritehere area. Between the two beaches can bring rewards but it's important to watch the tides as you can't get back around the mouth at high tide.

trout fishing in awakino

Awakino River

The upper reaches of the Awakino River are some of the best fly fishing waters in New Zealand, known for its whitebait fishing.

In a beautiful setting, the Awakino River holds great stocks of rainbow and brown trout. With many kilometres of good water and easy access, the entire river has a lot to offer anglers.

Mangaotaki River

Especially in the middle reaches of the Mangaotaki River, there is ideal fishing water for novices and learners.

Mokau River

Although the Mokua River holds a reasonable trout population alongside State Highway 3, the river is not attractive to fish due to the discolored water and numerous snags.
